September 10th, 2021 will be our our 117th year Anniversary and celebration of “Founder’s Day”. The history of the shrine at St. Coletta started in 1914, when it was built by the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi. The Sisters were ahead of their time as the shrine incorporated electrical lighting during construction, both to the Virgin Mary’s halo and to the shrine itself. The rock wall was constructed of field stone from the St. Coletta farm fields. The resourceful Sisters constructed the halo using a farm lamp and surrounded the grotto with an iron fence and gate from a firm in Chicago. Just over the hill from the grotto you will find a cemetery where some of the sisters, founders, and clients are buried. We have such an incredible history here at St. Coletta and we continue to add accomplishments every year, every day…Just as the sisters did themselves, 117 years ago. We will celebrate this year commemorating our 115 years of our our mission and our Franciscan Values of Compassion, Dignity, and Respect – supporting our individuals to achieve their highest quality of life, personal growth, and spiritual awareness.
