Down Syndrome Awareness Month
October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month.
This month of October, we celebrate those with Down syndrome and their abilities and accomplishments.
Down syndrome is one of the most common genetic birth defects in the United States, affecting one of every 691 babies. Those with Down syndrome usually experience mental and social challenges.
Despite this, many excel in life and live independently. They are athletes, actors, business owners, and celebrities all who have Down syndrome. The disorder does not break their spirit, it strengthens it.
Some famous celebrities who have Down syndrome include:
Chris Burke, actor (you may know him as “Corky” from the show Life Goes On)
Madeline Stuart, model
Lauren Potter, actress (Becky Jackson from Glee)
Karen Gaffney, athlete (swam the English Channel in 2001; swam nine miles across Lake Tahoe)
Edward Barbanell, actor (The Ringer, 2005)
Remember it is not about celebrating disabilities, it is celebrating abilities that is important during this month.
Great job to all who have accomplished much this month!
